Statement on COVID-19 Diagnosis

26 July 2020
To Residents, Resident Representatives and Staff
Today, a case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in a staff member working in the kitchen at Kalyna Care.
The worker is in quarantine and as a precaution all kitchen staff who had close contact with the worker has been requested to get tested and self-isolate for 14 days, and the kitchen area will undergo deep cleaning by a commercial cleaning company specifically for COVID-19.
We have notified public health officials and are following procedures recommended by the Department of Health.
Due to the heightened concern relating to aged care facilities, additional precautions have been taken including:

  1. Residents remaining in their rooms until further notice
  2. PPEs always used in giving care
  3. No non-essential staff, visitors and contractors
  4. All communal areas closed off
  5. No new admissions
  6. No non-urgent transfers (In and Out)
  7. No construction activity

The above will remain in place until the Department of Health visits the site and undertakes a risk assessment.
It is important that you are aware of this situation as soon as possible.
We know this is extremely worrying for you and that you will want to call the facility to find out about the welfare of your loved one. But we seek your cooperation and patience if the telephone is not answered quickly as all staff are working tirelessly to keep residents calm and reassured and above all safe.
We are putting on extra staff to help as the service will be slower with staff having to put on and take off PPEs for each resident. This is critical, and staff cannot rush the donning and doffing of PPEs to minimise spread of infection if any.
While visitor restrictions are in place, we will be working and communicating closely with residents, their families and friends, to maintain alternative connections such as video conferencing.
Kalyna Care continues to be on maximum alert levels.
We have strong infection controls in place and are acting on advice from the Department of Health and medical authorities.
We are committed to providing the latest information to staff, residents and families
We wish to thank our much-loved residents, their families and friends for their understanding during this challenging period.
In particular, we want to acknowledge our amazing staff for their approach and professionalism throughout this difficult time.
